After inaugurating the new bike lane on Insurgentes Street, Celaya has expanded its cycling infrastructure, providing residents with another dedicated route for safer and more convenient bicycle travel.
The Traffic and Road Police Department recently completed the 776-yd bike lane located in the underpass section. The route stretches from Ximhai Park to the intersection with Insurgentes Street, expanding cycling infrastructure in Celaya.
According to Francisco Frías Méndez, the department’s director, the initiative aims to improve transportation connectivity across the municipality.
“We’re expanding transportation connections throughout the municipality, and this project was a priority. The route starts outside Ximhai Park, continues for 776 yards to Insurgentes Street, and then links with the corridor leading south,” Frías explained.
According to the agency official, the bike lane was planned following the proper development process, including technical assessments and public input. As a result, the project responds to community demand for safer and better-connected cycling infrastructure.
“It is an important bike route, and the local cycling community asked for it. We conducted research and a road safety audit, which confirmed that the project was feasible. So, we moved forward with it,” he said.
Infrastructure Reinforcement
In addition, he noted that this bike lane section will receive additional protective cycling infrastructure. The reason is that motor vehicles frequently enter bike lanes, and some drivers even park their cars inside these designated cycling spaces.
Therefore, Méndez highlighted the importance of improving road safety awareness across the community. Furthermore, he explained that local authorities will continue promoting a more equitable urban mobility network where pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and other road users can travel safely and share public streets responsibly.
“We’re working closely with our road safety education department to reach every group within the mobility hierarchy. Disregarding designated spaces is an issue found in many cities, and it comes down to a lack of traffic awareness. That’s why we’ll continue strengthening both education and infrastructure. This section isn’t finished yet, and we’ll reinforce it to provide greater safety for cyclists,” he explained.
He also pointed out that the opening of the bike lane on Insurgentes Street brings the total length of cycling infrastructure completed under the current administration in Celaya to 8 miles.
“We’ll continue extending the cycling network wherever possible. As of today, the Traffic and Road Police Department has completed 8 miles of cycling infrastructure. Our municipality ranks second in the state for bicycle use, and we remain committed to encouraging cycling as a safe and sustainable transportation option,” he added.
What Do Cyclists Think of the Bike Lane on Insurgentes Street?
Public demand from the cycling community played a key role in the development of the bike lane on Insurgentes Street. At the same time, cyclists point out that maintaining existing bike lanes is just as important as building new cycling infrastructure.
“I’m very pleased to see the municipality creating more space for cyclists. However, I hope they don’t forget to maintain not only this new bike lane, but also all the ones that are already in place,” cyclist Armando López told AM News Site.
In addition, another cyclist explained that the new bike lane creates an opportunity for local authorities and the cycling community to work together toward improving road safety awareness and encouraging more responsible use of public streets.
“We often criticize the municipality. Now that a new bike lane is available, everyone has a role to play. Citizens should strengthen their road safety awarenes, and local authorities should continue maintaining these sections of cycling infrastructure,” he said.
