Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Cycle Path: A Natural Paradise

Cyclists, runners, and pedestrians can experience a true natural paradise as they travel along the Ixtapa Cycle Path in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.

This cycling corridor stands out as one of Mexico’s most remarkable greenways, featuring 14 miles of diverse landscapes, scenic views, and unique natural surroundings that make it a must-visit destination for cyclists.

Beyond providing a peaceful escape from the city, the Ixtapa route gives cyclists a unique chance to connect with local flora and fauna. Stretching 14 miles, it also serves as a natural habitat for diverse wildlife.

What Will You Find Along the Way?

When we describe it as one of the most diverse cycling routes in Mexico, we are not exaggerating. Throughout the ride, cyclists can experience ever-changing landscapes and spot different species of animals along the route.

At certain points along the route, cyclists are immersed beneath massive trees that rise up to 38 yards above the ground, forming a breathtaking tunnel of greenery. The trail crosses a tropical forest where breadnut, ceiba, and parota trees thrive, adding to the beauty and diversity of the landscape.

Leave your headphones behind during these sections and let the sounds of the forest accompany your ride. The treetops come alive with the songs of birds, including parakeets, woodpeckers, herons, parrots, cardinals, orioles, and several other species that call this tropical ecosystem home.

Wildlife is not limited to the treetops; terrestrial and marine species are also part of the Ixtapa Cycle Path experience. Keep your eyes open while riding, and you may discover armadillos, ferrets, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and other animals that inhabit this remarkable natural environment.

You will definitely need some energy to complete the ride, but the journey also brings encounters with cold-blooded creatures such as lake turtles, iguanas, and—believe it or not—even crocodiles.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Cycle Path: A One-of-a-Kind Cycling Experience

However, the Ixtapa bike path stands out for another important reason. Beyond its natural landscapes and recreational appeal, it is the only cycling route in Mexico to receive the Environmental Tourism Quality Certification from Mexico’s Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), making it a truly unique destination for cyclists and nature lovers.
