If you’re a bike fan, you have surely heard that authorities can’t impose economic fines, but verbal ones; at least in most of states or countries.
However, each county has their own traffic regulations, and may vary in each place that you pedal. We recommend you to know the traffic regulations of other state or country if your plan is cycling in another place.
In Mexico City, cyclists can transit freely without the fear of receive a fine (even though they committed a violation). The most that can happen in legal and civil terms, is a verbal warning of authorities.
This doesn’t mean that as a cyclist you’re free to go in sidewalks, two way or at high speed in pedestrian zones. Even though exist legal fines, you can cause an accident by crashing against someone else, resulting in injuries that may require legal actions.
On the other hand, in San Luis Potosí, in spite of being part of Mexico, committing a violation in bike is a reason to receive a monetary policy. We will explain you these offenses.

Fines for cyclists, how much these cost?
Before continue, remember that fines for cyclists and costs to explain are valid only in San Luis Potosi. However, as above mentioned, this doesn’t mean you’re free to commit these violations in case that your city hall or state doesn’t apply them.
In total, 11 infrastructures that the traffic regulations of the organization considers, a few if we contemplate that the catalog has a total of 224 infringements in general.
Likewise, except for one of these offenses, the other 10 can be settled through the participation in education and road culture programs.
Fines and costs
- When cycling you find other cyclist in front or behind you, you must follow that line, one behind other.
- If one or more circulate in a parallel way, would make them creditors to pay a $542.85 MXN fine.
- Be careful of not circulate within the continuous flow paths. If you do, you would pay $542.85 pesos.
- The third sanction to receive a ticket of $542.85 MXN, is to circulate out of the cycling infrastructure, meaning, bikeways, when exist in the road you’re cycling.

Fines of $542.85 MXN
- The following fines for cyclists also make you to pay a sanction of $542.85 MXN:
- Cycling without caution to turn to right or going forward when a motorized vehicle rides to the left.
- It is prohibited to take to other person or a load that obstructs your view, balance or correct cycling, if you do this, you can receive a ticket.
- Even though some years ago it was a common practice, is prohibited to hang on to vehicles in motion. This, besides this monetary sanction can end in severe accidents, or even fatal ones.
- The last of the fines with the cost of $542.85, is transporting bikes in vehicles without securing them. As you see, you don’t need to be on the bike to get a ticket, so, be careful with this rule.
- In this aspect, we must emphasize that yes, we say that is prohibited to go with other or more people in the same bike, the only way to do this without resulting in a ticket, is that bike is adapted to take more than one passenger. If not, the cost of the fine is $217.14.
- One of the cheapest fines that you can commit, but also the most common and dangerous is circulate on the sidewalk or exclusive spaces for pedestrians. The cost of this is $128.11.

The most and less expensive fines for cyclists
As you have seen, until now, no one exceeds the $1,000 and isn’t below the $120. But, exist one that exceeds the higher cost until now and other under the cheapest ones. Here are these:
The cheapest sanction to receive is for circulating outside of the right end of the road. if you do, you can get a with $108.57 ticket.
On the other hand, the most expensive fine for cyclists goes to a $1085.70. The cyclists that receive this, are those that circulate without stop when a vehicle of public transport stop to board and descend passengers.
Until now, we have presented you the 11 fines that deserve an economic sanction. However, as you will remember, we said that just one of them can’t have a substitution with the participation in education and road culture programs. Can you guess which one is and why?

Well, it seems that a fine is not the most expensive one, but neither the cheapest one. The sanction that we refer to, is the one that punish the cycling in sidewalks or exclusive spaces for pedestrian.
This is due that, in that case, and according to the 210 article of the traffic regulations, is a severe offense “due these actions represent a damage for common interest of society, and in specific cases can attempt on the life, safety, healthy, well-being, integrity, civil values and equity of people”.
