The so-called Perla Tapatía is one of the greatest cycling cities in Mexico. That is obvious considering that in a six-year term, bikeways in Guadalajara were exponentially doubled.

The previous after municipal and state authorities improved the measures to create a more active mobility and by focusing more to develop the use of cycling infrastructure instead of car use.

In this way, Guadalajara bikeways have increased more than the double in the last 6 years, in metropolitan zone itself.

For 2019, were reported 178.15 kilometers of cycling infrastructure. And for 2024, the number arose to 425 kilometers, according with numbers of MIDE Jalisco, and Metropolitan Agency of Infrastructure for Mobility (in Spanish, AMIM).

In short, the cycle paths in this zone had an awesome increase of 139% in the last six-year term. In addition to the over 400 km that now exist, 253 were constructed between 2020 and 2024.

What are the new bikeways in Guadalajara?

Even though in that six-year term were constructed new bikeways in Guadalajara, also increased sections in some existent cycling infrastructures.

Among the new bikeways, are the ones installed in Mariano Otero, in Zapopan. The bikeway of Javier Mina Avenue, from Tetlan to Independencia driveway, with 7.1 km. And the four-kilometer extension of the Paseo Alcalde bikeway until Agua Azul Park, in Guadalajara.

In the same way, exist other separated lanes that even though are not exclusive for cycling transit, can be used by cyclists and public transport. An example is the shared bus bike lane located on Victoriano Salado Alvarez & Contreras Medellin, which has a 3.7 km extension.

Zapopan, an example of cycling mobility

In addition to Guadalajara city, Zapopan has also demonstrated its commitment to creating a more sustainable mobility through bike.

The municipality increased a 38.9% of kilometers of cycling infrastructure between 2020 and 2023, just a 0.3% less than Guadalajara in the same period, as indicates the most recent report of metropolitan cycling mobility of the AMIM.

On the other hand, Tlajomulco de Zuñiga also helped to increase cycle paths of city with a 14.87% of kilometers.

All the previous demonstrates the effort of Perla Tapatia to keep being a referent of a cycling city in Mexico. However, is important that municipal and state authorities provide the best possible security in & off the bikeways in Guadalajara.

This will be achieved with well signed and channelized cyclepaths and a better interconnection among them. In the same way, is important that cyclists respect the corresponding traffic regulations; mobility is made by all of us.
