San Diego inhabitants and cyclists now have more safe miles to cover thanks to the Pershing bikeway opening.

A new cycling infrastructure of 2.3 miles of length. The recent bike lane covers from Utah Street and North Park, to C Street on the center of San Diego.

Pershing bikeway is part of the SAN DIEGO REGIONAL BIKE PLAN. Early Action Program an initiative by San Diego Association of Governments, to incentivize sustainable means of transport.

Before this situation, Sean Elo-Rivera, SANDAG vice-president and San Diego City Council president, emphasized that infrastructure will be more safe for citizens & have a new alternative to get to their destinations.

“We all deserve to have safe and affordable options to get where we have to go. The new Pershing bikeway ample the opportunities and safety for voters and many San Diego inhabitants”, Elo-Rivera stated.

Pershing Bike Way, a new sustainable alternative

The construction of bike lanes has the intention of provide more security to bike and non-motorized transport users. Their implementation looks for more people to choose the use of sustainable transports and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

In accordance to San Diego authorities, Pershing bike way comply with both functions. In one hand, offers a safe path for residents and visitors that move by Parque Balboa and their surroundings. On the other hand, is an alternative route to avoid the use of cars or other motorized transports.

In this connection, the congressman, Scott Peters emphasized the importance of these projects to achieve climate purposes of the city.

“The new Pershing Drive bikeway represents the best kind of urban planning: visually appealing and welcome people who want to get off of their vehicles and enjoy a walk or bike ride”, confirmed Peters.

A bike path with innovation

The Pershing bikeway infrastructure has a design to provide safety to cyclist, and doesn’t interfere with rest of transit. In this way, all the mobility options can co-exist efficiently.

For example, it includes a diagonal crossing on B Street and 19th Street, allowing cyclist to cross at the intersection safely while vehicle traffic stops.

A 75ft bridge in Florida Canyon road and a roundabout of 65ft of diameter at Pershing Drive and Redwood Street are implementations to improve traffic flow.

Besides, implemented 5 new pedestrian intersections and 70 lights to increase visibility and security of all the bikeway users.

For a better view of infrastructure, Pershing bikeway has a landscape design that was in charge of gardeners and designers of Parque Balboa. The specimens were chosen to resist and enrich the beauty of the environment.

Greater cyclist safety

San Diego Major, Todd Gloria emphasized that project improves quality of life, fostering healthy and providing a safe path for cyclists.

“San Diego inhabitants deserve to travel safely through our city and I am committed to work with other leaders and local agencies as SANDAG to develop and support projects as the Pershing bike way, that prioritize safety in concurred highways and improve quality of life”, highlighted Gloria.

Additionally, Everett Townsend, acting director of district 11, stressed that new bikeway contributes to safety of cyclists & pedestrians. Preventing accidents with other means of transport and reduce risk of severe injuries.

The Pershing bike way had an investment of 14 million dollars.
