Cyclists in San Diego have a safer new route to enjoy with the opening of the Pershing Bike Lane. The new cycling corridor stretches 2.3 miles expanding the city’s bike network.
This cycling corridor stretches from Utah Street and Landis Street in North Park to C Street in downtown San Diego, improving connectivity between residential neighborhoods and the city’s urban core.
The Pershing Bike Lane is one of the projects included in the Regional Bike Plan Early Action Program, developed by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to promote cycling and other sustainable transportation options.
In response, Sean Elo-Rivera, Vice Chair of SANDAG and President of the San Diego City Council, said the new cycling infrastructure will improve safety for residents and provide another transportation option for reaching destinations throughout the city.
“Everyone deserves safe and affordable transportation options. The new Pershing Bike Lane increases mobility choices and enhances safety for my constituents as well as many other residents throughout San Diego,” he said.
Pershing Bike Lane: A New Sustainable Transportation Alternative
Bike lanes are designed to create safer conditions for cyclists and other non-motorized road users. As these networks grow, more people are encouraged to choose sustainable transportation, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve urban mobility.
According to city officials, the Pershing Bike Lane serves two important purposes. First, it creates a safer route for residents and visitors riding through Balboa Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Second, it gives travelers a practical alternative to driving, encouraging more sustainable ways to move around the city.
Congressman Scott Peters emphasized that projects like the Pershing Bike Lane play an important role in helping San Diego move closer to its climate objectives.
“The new Pershing Drive Bike Lane showcases the best of urban planning. It enhances the public space while encouraging residents to leave their cars behind in favor of walking or cycling.”
Innovation in Cycling Infrastructure
The design of the Pershing Bike Lane focuses on cyclist safety and maintains proper traffic flow. This approach allows different mobility options to coexist and creates a more balanced transportation network.
For example, the bike lane includes a diagonal crossing at B Street and 19th Street, allowing cyclists to cross the intersection safely while vehicle traffic is stopped.
The Pershing Bike Lane project features a 75-ft bridge over Florida Canyon Creek and a 65-ft diameter roundabout at Pershing Drive and Redwood Street. Together, these improvements enhance traffic flow and support safer urban mobility.
The Pershing Bike Lane project includes five new pedestrian crossings and 70 pathway lights that enhance visibility and safety for cyclists and other users traveling along the corridor during both daytime and nighttime conditions.
This cycling infrastructure project features a 75-ft bridge over Florida Canyon Creek and a 65-ft diameter roundabout at Pershing Drive and Redwood Street. Together, these improvements enhance traffic flow and support safer urban mobility.
Improved Cyclist Safety
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria highlighted that this project improves quality of life by promoting healthier lifestyles and providing cyclists with a safe path to ride.
“The city’s residents deserve to travel safely through our city and I am committed to work with other leaders and local agencies as SANDAG to develop and support projects as the Pershing bike way, that prioritize safety in concurred highways and improve quality of life”, highlighted Gloria.
Everett Townsend, acting director of Caltrans District 11, emphasized that the new bike path represents a major step forward in road safety. According to Townsend, this infrastructure not only protects cyclists and pedestrians but also helps reduce conflicts with other vehicles, resulting in a lower likelihood of serious injuries.
A total of $14 million was invested in the construction of the Pershing Bike Lane.
